We practice in all domains of Police & Public Safety Psychology, including assessment (pre-employment psychological screenings and fitness for duty evaluations), intervention, operational support, and organizational consulting.
We are dedicated to maintain our excellent reputation for being reliable, well-trained, compassionate, and well- respected in the first responder community.
HISTORY STATEMENT
In 2002, Dr. Gallivan became the CEO and founder of Gina Gallivan and Associates/Psychological Consulting Associates, Inc. Her practice is recognized as a leader in the treatment of first responders who have experienced Traumatic Incidents and challenges throughout their careers.
Dr. Gallivan and her team have responded to the following critical incidents:
In 2002, after working with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as a Law Enforcement Psychologist, Dr. Gallivan began working for Dr. Larry Blum (one of the pioneers of Police Psychology). She took over his practice after he retired in 2009.
Over the years, numerous experienced police psychologists have joined her team. Together they provide the following services:
Critical Incident Stress Debriefings
Immediate response to trauma resulting from line of duty deaths, suicides, shootings, pediatric deaths, child abuse cases, homicide or traffic collision scenes, and personal injuries.
Our Emergency Call-Out Team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week to serve your emergency needs. We contract with other highly skilled licensed professionals across the state and the country to meet the demands of large-scale emergency situations.
Officer Involved Shooting Debriefings
Our staff members follow the recommendations set forth by the Police Psychological Services Section of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). These guidelines were developed to provide information and recommendations on constructively supporting officers involved in a shooting.
The field experience of members of the IACP’s Psychological Services Section suggests that following these guidelines can reduce the probability of long-lasting psychological and emotional problems resulting from a shooting incident. These guidelines are not meant to be a rigid protocol and work best when applied in a case-by-case manner appropriate to each unique situation.
Pre-employment Psychological Screenings and Fitness for Duty Evaluations
Our lead Psychologists on this team have each conducted over 10,000 evaluations. These evaluations are in compliance with the California Government Code 1031 (f)(2)(B), which requires our Licensed Clinical Psychologists to meet the education and training requirements set forth by the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
Group Therapy
This is a powerful vehicle for growth and change, and it has been an effective treatment option for over 50 years. It involves counseling for up to eight people under the guidance of a professionally trained psychologist to help themselves and each another.
Peer Support Training
Peer support has proven to be a great tool for public safety employees. Peer Support members are co-workers who are trained by a licensed psychologist to help provide private and confidential (AB-1117) emotional support, psychoeducation, and appropriate referrals. Peer Support is an intervention that relies on shared experiences and trust to provide support and identify a potential high-risk situation before a crisis event occurs.
Annual Wellness Visits
This has recently become a service high in demand for many departments. The annual visit is an opportunity to explore the events from the past year in a supportive environment and learn coping strategies and resiliency skills for preventative care. Annual Wellness Visits are NOT fitness for duty evaluations. They serve as a bridge to each employee in your department to a qualified, culturally competent clinician.
In 2017, Gina Gallivan and Associates developed what is known as the Southern California Regional Peer Support Team. Peer Support Team Leaders from each department were brought together to form a Regional Team to provide emotional mutual aid and support to each other. Other psychologists, chaplains, and therapists were invited to join, and the Regional Team has grown into a strong resource for many public safety agencies in Southern California.
In 2022, Gina Gallivan and Associates/Psychological Consulting Associates, Inc introduced “The Ultimate Wellness Program." The Ultimate Wellness Program brings a comprehensive team of professional and wellness amenities to each police station. Vendors to come to your station and teach about nutrition, financial planning, physical fitness, counseling, alcohol abuse awareness, meditation, and other substance-free ways to cope with stress. This model of wellness is meant to focus on Preventative versus Reactive mental health care. This program includes in-house psychologists (regular office hours at your station), annual wellness visits, and numerous mental health trainings.

In 2023, Gina Gallivan and Associates/Psychological Consulting Associates, Inc introduced a variety of Retreats for first responders and their families. These retreats are provided off site in locations such as Lake Arrowhead, June Lake, Big Bear, Ramona, and La Quinta. Culturally competent clinicians and highly trained peer support members provide psychoeducation, training, and counseling.
